The Pew Research Center found in 2019 that 72% of Americans use social media. The percentage of teen and young adult users is even higher. At the same time, “I’m bored” is a constant refrain, uttered as if boredom relief is a perplexing mystery. Researchers Andrew Lepp, Ph.D., and Jacob Barkley, Ph.D., from Kent State University’s College of Education, Health and Human Services suspected a relationship between boredom and social media use but wondered about cause and effect. Does social media use cause boredom? Or does boredom cause social media use? To answer these questions, they designed an...

Kent State alumna Alyssa Mittereder, B.S. ‘19, has struggled with an issue faced by many during the pandemic: job loss.  Mitterder says while she was happy to receive the stimulus check at the beginning of the pandemic, she could not apply for unemployment in Ohio because she had already been laid off twice before starting her job in Cleveland, where she was laid off a third time.  The pandemic has turned the hospitality industry upside down. A primarily steady industry has now seen some of the most significant losses due to state and county shutdowns.  “You're always g...

Diary of a Golden Flash featuring Anna Brent

My name is Abby Clarke! My major is communication studies with a concentration in Applied Communication and a minor in Organizational Communication. I am a graduate of Auburn Career Center and Berkshire Jr./Sr. High school (2018). I chose Kent State Geauga because of the small class sizes, the staff/professors, and the opportunity to work on campus. I began as a student employee that same year in the fall and still currently work in student services and at Preston Chevrolet in Burton. Being in student services has driven my interest in helping people, especially students. This is also another ...
