  The trees on Kent State University’s campus bring something new to marvel at each season. A new collaborative study between researchers at Kent State University and Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) has confirmed a way to determine the age of beluga whales - a topic that has been the center of much debate. “Some scientists felt the standard measurement (one growth layer group per year) did not apply to belugas, which made age estimation difficult,” said Joseph Ortiz, Ph.D., professor and assistant chair in the Department of Geology in Kent State’s College of Arts and Sciences. The Golden Flash Asset Management (GFAM) Group is composed of Kent State students who are interested in finance. The team manages an investment fund of over $1 million in assets from the Kent State Foundation. The group currently has 26 active members. The Kent State University at Tuscarawas Engineering Technology Department announced the winners of two competitions for area high school students during the Engineering Technology Opportunity Expo held February 19. The students were trained in alternative energy and fluid power. The submitted entries were judged by a committee of campus faculty and staff. First place winners were awarded $100, second place winners were awarded $50 and third place winners were awarded $25. While teaming up with The Academy of American Poets, the Wick Poetry Center at Kent State University created a national contest where poems were submitted to honor the 50th commemoration of May 4, 1970. The Wick Poetry Center encourages new aspiring poets through scholarship opportunities and provides creators of all expertise the outlet to engage in workshops and publications.
