The “C” in “college” might as well stand for “cramming.” Studies show students are notoriously bad at adopting and adhering consistently to high-impact study habits that help them retain knowledge long-term. Researchers and faculty at Kent State University, however, are collaborating on a new project to put a modern technological twist on a tried-and-true study tactic. “We are working with faculty in the sciences to evaluate the degree to which a technique called successive relearning can improve students’ learning and retention of co...

Case and McMahon's print, depicting overlapping plants in blue, pink, purple, orange, yellow and black, on a white background.

Andrea Case sits at a table in Kent State’s Center for the Visual Arts, carefully contemplating the silhouettes of leaves printed in bold contrasting colors on the paper in front of her. “As a non-artist, I still feel comfortable having an opinion about this art, and trying to figure out what it means, and if I like it,” she said. “But I think people don’t quite approach scientific information in the same way if they’re not a scientist.”
Dr. Case should like the piece; as an associate professor of biological sciences, she stepped out of her comfort zone to help create it.
Now the evolutio...

The May 4 50th Commemoration Advisory Committee appreciates the personal and meaningful responses we have received about the inclusion of activist Jane Fonda as one of several keynote speakers at the 50th Commemoration of the Kent State shooting. We take to heart the painful feelings expressed by those for whom Fonda’s visit to Hanoi as a young activist in 1972 had a profound impact. We are equally moved by those who expressed their high regard for Fonda’s atonement after the incident and her lifelong activism in support of human rights and civil rights. As a diverse group of individuals...

Researchers Study Infection Risk Reduction Program

A new infection control program was recently piloted at Kent State University. A recent study strategically placed hand sanitizers and a surface disinfectant spray throughout athletic training rooms in two high schools and two colleges in Northeast Ohio, including Kent State. According to a recent press release, student athletes are in close contact in the shared environment of an athletic training room, and in the presence of poor hygiene and contamination, athletes can be exposed to a variety of germs that cause infection. Center for Architecture and Design

What is the role of BioDesign in addressing environmental issues we face locally and globally? What does it mean to "design with life?" Kent State University researchers have some ideas on these matters and will soon put them on full display at one of the institution's top-tier research forums: the Seventh Annual Environmental Science and Design Symposium. The event is just one way the university is making Biodesign a year-long research focus for students and faculty. Registration is now open for the conference, which runs from March 16-18, and features speakers from Kent and the nati...

Members of Kent State's ROTC post the colors during the university's observance of Veteran's Day

“I can’t even find the words to express how thankful I am for the experiences I’ve had here,” said Rachel Pike-Lee. “In every degree that I’ve pursued here, this school has always been very accepting. That’s something that really sticks out to me-- how open-minded the entire university is.” The 32-year-old veteran of the United States Coast Guard finished the accelerated police academy in the summer of 2010 after first earning her undergraduate degree in interpersonal communication studies from Kent State. Pike-Lee then went on to serve active duty in the United States Coast Guard from 2...
