A student gets tested for COVID-19 on campus

As part of Kent State University’s ongoing strategy to help stop the spread of COVID-19, Kent State has partnered with the city of Kent to bring the Ohio Department of Health’s Pandemic Testing Team to campus from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15 for an open testing event. This event, just five days before many will leave the Kent Campus for Thanksgiving break, was specifically timed so that students and others can get tested and know before they leave if it is safe to travel or visit with family and friends over the holiday without fear they could be spreading COVID-19. She also volunteers as a poll worker, helping people to actually vote once they’ve registered. Her drive to increase voter turnout among students beg...

HyperbolicHedgehog

In a paper published in "Nature," researchers in Trustees Research Professor Oleg Lavrentovich’s materials science group at Kent State describe how it moved a stabilized droplet of active bacteria along a pre-determined path by harnessing the broken symmetry of a liquid crystal. The researchers found that by aligning the crystal molecules they could force the droplet to move in a straight line, in contrast to its random motion in a Newtonian fluid. It is hoped that this system could be used to model microscopic organisms. Read more: https://physicsworld.com/a/hyperbolic-hedgehog-steers...

Most people visualize test tubes and microscopes when they consider scientific research. But for Psychology Associate Professor Arne Weigold, Ph.D., and student researcher Emily Turkily (pictured left), scientific research involves measuring the power of transcendence in people’s lives; specifically, the power of hope. As part of the 2020 eight-week Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program at Kent State University at Geauga, Dr. Weigold mentored Emily, his selected SURE research assistant. Emily is a junior psychology major and is preparing for graduate studies...
