  The Kent State University Fashion School gets a lot of requests for their world-renowned designs and high-tech creations, but an old-fashioned letter that arrived in the mail on Sept. 10, 2015, contained a request unlike anything they had ever received. Kent State University at Trumbull geology professor David Hacker, Ph.D., has been named as one of three recipients of the Kent State Alumni Association’s 2015 Distinguished Teaching Award (DTA). Sponsored by the Kent State Alumni Association, the DTA is the university’s most prestigious honor in teaching. Sociology students researching food systems on the Kent State East Liverpool Campus

Students in Dr. Lydia Rose’s researching society class at Kent State East Liverpool are using more than text books and notes for their lessons this semester. They also are using research techniques to study food systems and food’s impact on the overall health and well-being of a society’s members. The students involved with this project are enrolled in Rose’s researching society class and are earning their experiential credit this term. Faculty members and students from the nursing program at Kent State East Liverpool volunteered during the recent Canfield Fair by conducting free blood pressure screenings at a booth sponsored by the Ohio Nurses Association, District Three, in the fair’s Medical Building. The volunteer effort was initiated and organized by Angela Douglass, RN, MSN, CNS, senior lecturer of nursing on the East Liverpool campus. School of Communication Studies junior applied communication major, Austin Hartsel, is using skills learned in the classroom to assist with fundraising efforts for his friend, David Bakos. Bakos was diagnosed with stage four adenocarcinoma in December 2014. “David is the nicest person you’ll ever meet; the last person on his mind is always himself,” Hartsel said. “But, he has the worst luck.” After his diagnosis, Bakos started going to the Cleveland Clinic to visit sick children. Public communication studies major Dominique Freeman recently researched the topic of skin bleaching among Nigerian women as a McNair Scholar. The McNair Scholars Program prepares first-generation, low-income, undergraduate students, from groups underrepresented in graduate schools, for doctoral study.
