Before sophomore Honors College student Jesse Thompson came to Kent State in 2022 from Cincinnati, Ohio, he often watched HGTV with his father– a handy man around the house who was often building things. With that influence, Jesse decided to major in construction management. While “Adopt a Disability for a Day” wasn’t featured in this October’s Disability Awareness Month event lineup, it was offered at the first “Understanding Disability and Physical Difference Month” celebrated on campus in November of 1971. Students, faculty, and staff were “encouraged to adopt a physical disability of blindness or being in a wheelchair” (Challenge Newsletter November 1972).
