Katrina Terry, MS Clinical Epidemiology ‘23
Katrina Terry graduated from Kent State University with a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology in Spring 2023. During her last semester of graduate school at the College of Public Health, she had the opportunity to work with Dr. Salil Deo at the Northeast Ohio VA Healthcare System, Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center on a large data study examining how social determinants of health impact temporal trends in cardiovascular mortality over a 20-year time span. Terry and Dr. Deo worked together to collect and analyze the data utilizing R Software and concluded that more socially vulnerable counties had higher rates of cardiovascular mortality overall and less improvement in cardiovascular mortality over the 20-year time span. In July, Terry also attended and presented an abstract poster of the research at the American Society for Preventive Cardiology (ASPC) Congress in Arlington, Texas. In October, their research was published in the Journal of the American Heart Association (JAHA). Terry is also a registered nurse and obtained her BSN at Brigham Young University-Idaho Idaho.

Jason Zibart, BSPH ‘18
Jason Zibart, BSPH, serves as community connected health manager at Benson Hospital, Arizona. Recently. Zibart was awarded a $1.2 million HRSA grant to create a rural health navigator program using public health ideas to reduce hospital readmissions and improve health equity. The new Rural Health Navigator Program at Benson Hospital aims to reduce hospital readmissions, increase the rate of discharged patients seeking follow-up care from primary care physicians, and encourage patients to seek treatment at local rural hospitals instead of distant urban facilities. By addressing the social determinants of health, the program is poised to improve patients' overall quality of life. This innovative approach combines public health and medical strategies, utilizing statewide admission and discharge data to realize these goals. Zibart graduated from Kent State University with a Bachelor of Science in Public Health in 2018 and he is a is an ardent advocate for building healthier communities through cross-sector collaborations. His work is dedicated to enhancing healthcare outcomes by addressing social determinants of health in southeast Arizona by establishing community collaborations and introducing traditional public health methodologies to the realm of rural medicine, such as expanding food pantries into local schools. In 2022, Zibart was honored as Arizona's 2022 Exceptional Rural Healthcare Professional of the Year by the Arizona Rural Health Association and was acknowledged as Arizona's Community Star by the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health (NOSORH) in 2020.
