PH Students Achieve at University’s Graduate Research Symposium

Five CPH graduate students were among the top presenters at Kent State’s 28th annual Graduate Research Symposium, United by Discovery: The New Face of Research, held April 19.
 
Receiving a first-place award for oral presentations were doctoral students Diana Kingsbury, Lorriane Odhiambo and Julie Schaefer and MPH student Sunita Shakya for A Focus Group Analysis of Global Hand Hygiene Practices and Perceptions, a study performed at the request of GOJO Industries, Inc.
 
Doctoral students Vanessa Marshall, Lorriane Odhiambo and Laura Schuch received a poster presentation award for The Use of Geospatial Video to Code Parcels for Predicting Risk of Exposure from Environmental Lead.
 
Dana Mowls, a master’s student, received an oral presentation award for Influenza Vaccination Rates in Adults with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease:  The Impact of a Diagnostic Breathing Test.
 
The college was extremely well-represented at the symposium, making 19 of the 84 total oral and 88 poster presentations. CPH Dean Sonia Alemagno, Ph.D., delivered the keynote address at the awards luncheon, discussing her career in research and sharing her wisdom with students about their future.
 
Kent State graduate students have celebrated scholarship and academic inquiry by featuring their research in the Graduate Student Senate’s annual research symposium since 1985.  Students from all disciplines gain speaking experience, receive interdisciplinary feedback and earn marks of distinction for their CVs.  Monetary prizes are awarded for outstanding presentations.
