About Us

The Youth and Family Advocate, in the First Star Kent State Academy, will be the primary contact for Kent State students impacted by care.

While offering services and resources, the objectives for the Purple Umbrella are structured around promoting academic success, encouraging college graduation; leading to professional employment. Additionally, the Purple Umbrella programming aims to support personal well-being of the student, develop career aspirations and build leadership capabilities. 

The following are activities that will support achievement of the aforementioned objectives (this list is not exhaustive):  

  • Assisting students with obtaining their driver’s license  
  • Special orientation to campus for new students (key departments and staff)
  • Hosting workshops focused on financial capabilities and career preparation
  • Support access to other systems (courts, human services, Medicaid, public assistance) 
  • Graduation preparation assistance (Graduation Preparation Seminars) 
  • Year-round housing options (community-based endeavor)
  • Financial aid and educational financial planning annual reviews
  • Work study or employee skill development 
  • Academic assessment, support and monitoring (working with pertinent departments) 
  • Campus engagement and social connections  
  • Cultural and personal identity development 
  • Leadership and advocacy skill development
  • Emergency funding support
  • Enrollment and admissions support
  • Welcome packs with supplies including toiletries and linen for incoming students
