In this Quick Tip, we would like to showcase a few options for creating and delivering engaging announcements in your course.
Review
Confirm Students Can See Announcements
- Review this incredibly helpful Instructor Guide that includes information about how and when students can see announcements, Canvas Inbox messages, and other notification setting options.
Design
Show Announcements on the Course Homepage
- Instructors can opt to show the most recent announcements on the course homepage. When using this feature, a section titled Recent Announcements will appear at the top of the course homepage.
- Recent announcements will be displayed with a text preview prompting students to click on them to view the entire announcement.
- Note: Students using the mobile app will not be able to see announcements on the homepage. They will be able to access announcements from the course navigation sidebar.
Prepare Announcements and Schedule Release
- Instructors can schedule announcements to be released at a certain date and time. This can help orient students as they progress through course modules.
Extend
Use Video and Audio to Connect with Students
- Instructors have the option to upload or record a video for a course announcement. Depending on the video length, frequency, and need for transcription, instructors may use either the Canvas Media Tool or Kaltura to add video to announcements. Instructions for each practice are immediately below.
- Canvas offers their media tool to quickly record a message for your students.
- Alternatively, for longer and/or repeatedly used videos, instructors can embed a previously recorded Kaltura video into the announcement. If captions are needed, use Kaltura Reach to generate subtitles for your video.
