Quick Tip: Gradebook History

POSTED: May. 01, 2025

Welcome to the penultimate installment of our Canvas Gradebook Quick Tip series!  This week we are interrupting your regularly scheduled programming (teaching and research) to spotlight the Gradebook History feature!

The Canvas Gradebook History feature provides instructors with an audit trail for all grade modifications in their Canvas course.  This tool allows them to view the history of all Gradebook changes, verify accuracy, troubleshoot errors, track regrades, monitor TA grading, investigate discrepancies, and ensure accountability. Filtering options for the Gradebook History include student, grader, artifact, and dates.

Accessing Your Gradebook History

To access the Gradebook History feature, follow these steps:

  1. Click on Grades in the course navigation menu.

  2. Click the Gradebook drop-down in the top left, and select the Gradebook History option.

Canvas Gradebook View drop-down menu, select Gradebook History

The Gradebook History page, as shown below, displays recent grade changes in the course. Every entry provides details such as the adjustment date [1], the specific student [2], the grader making the change [3], and the relevant course item (artifact) [4]. Furthermore, instructors are able to view the score that existed before the change [5], the score resulting from the change [6], and the up-to-date grade for that particular assignment [7].

Note: If an instructor's grading access in a course is limited to interacting only with students within a specific section, the Gradebook History page will likewise only display history pertaining to students in that section.

Using the Filters

The filter options allow instructors to narrow down the displayed grade change history based on specific criteria. This helps with quickly finding particular grade changes instead of manually searching through the entire history log.

To locate a specific grade change, instructors can filter grading history by student [1], grader [2], artifact (assignment) [3], and start or end date [4].

Canvas Gradebook Filter options: Student, Grader, Artifact, and Dates

For filtering by Student, Grader, or Artifact filter, start typing the name within the search field area [1]. Canvas automatically populates a list with potential matches. Choose the appropriate name from the suggestions [2] to proceed. To apply your specified filters, click the blue “Filter” button [3].

We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming... likely involving coffee, emails, preparing for finals, and perhaps even more grading. We hope this was useful!
