Quick Tip: Roll Call Attendance Tool

Roll Call Attendance is a tool that allows instructors to take student attendance electronically via a list of student names or a seating chart grid. The Attendance tool can be used for both online and face-to-face courses.

Roll Call Attendance automatically adds a Roll Call Attendance column to the Gradebook and all attendance entered will be displayed as a percentage based upon how many times you have taken attendance.

How enable the Roll Call Attendance tool in a course

By default, the Roll Call Attendance tool is hidden from the navigation menu, so it must be enabled in the courses that you want to use it in. To enable the the Roll Call Attendance tool:

  1. Click Settings on the left-side course navigation menu.
  2. Click on the Navigation tab at the top of the page.
  3. Locate the Attendance tool in the list of hidden tools.
  4. Drag and drop the Attendance tool to the top list of navigational tools.
  5. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the Save button.
     

How to use the Roll Call Attendance tool in a course

Attendance can be quickly and easily taken using a computer or any mobile device with the free Canvas mobile app installed.

To avoid Attendance calculation errors, you should not delete, rename, or unpublish the Attendance assignment.  You can change the point value for Attendance or exclude it from the gradebook.  Additional details on using the tool can be found in the following Canvas guides:
