Acquiring Designer Fashion at Discount Prices

Want to obtain designer clothing and bags at a lower price? Businesses that sell secondhand garments and bags allow buyers to do that at a fraction of the original price, as highlighted by consumer reporter John Matarese of WCPO-TV in Cincinnati, Ohio, in a recent story that aired on multiple television stations across the country in more than 20 states.

Lauren Copeland, Ph.D., assistant professor at Kent State University’s School of Fashion, shared her knowledge on the topic. She told the reporter that luxury brands must figure out where they fit in in this new era of working from home.

“They are learning how they can keep as much profit as possible and still keep their brand identity,” Copeland said.

While consumers can buy secondhand apparel that is unique or has a story behind it, Copeland says to use caution when buying directly from a seller. She says it is important to:

  • Check the quality, especially at the seams.
  • Compare logos and labels to make sure it is not counterfeit.
  • Make sure the price is in line with similar items on the market.
