Flash Focus: Angelique Wong

Food and LaunchNET help graduate student learn core entrepreneurship skills

Welcome to Flash Focus! In this series, we introduce you to fascinating student Flashes from all walks of life.

Meet Angelique Wong, a 2022 fashion design alumna and current graduate student from Silver Spring, Maryland.

Wong first came to Kent State University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in fashion design. She wasn’t done with her studies though after she received that degree. Wong is now pursuing a master’s degree in emerging media and technology.

“I chose this program because it felt like the best interdisciplinary program between the knowledge I wanted to gain about the changing environment of media and enhancing my own entrepreneurial ambitions and skills,” Wong said.

Along with being a student, Wong had combined her passion for entrepreneurship with her love of food by starting her own business creating charcuterie tables, trays and boxes for events. Wong loves that through her edible displays she can spread joy to others.

“I enjoy it because of how much joy people get from eating them,” Wong said. “Creating charcuterie tables is such a great way to be creative and feel like the project can still serve someone.”

Not only does charcuterie benefit those who receive Wong’s treat, but this hobby-turned-business has also taught Wong some valuable life skills she then translated to her business.

“Charcuterie also takes a lot of time, patience and attention to detail,” Wong said. “These are skills I utilize in my career and academic pursuits that I enjoy, and charcuterie allows me to utilize them in a fun way.”

Along with these life lessons Wong has learned from charcuterie, she has also found support for her business in both her undergraduate and graduate career at Kent State by being a client for LaunchNET Kent State, a co-curricular, cross-campus program that serves students, alumni, staff and faculty who are interested in entrepreneurship and innovation. This semester she also is a graduate assistant focused on client outreach and engagement at LaunchNET.

“LaunchNET has been a huge part of my college career because it gave me the confidence to pursue my entrepreneurial dreams and meet amazing people who've paved their own way in their careers,” Wong said.

When looking back on her years at Kent State, being a member of Kent State’s Women’s Track and Field team has been a memorable experience for Wong. She was on her high school’s track and field team but never experienced strong team building until her time at Kent State.

“Being on the track and field team at Kent was like a childhood dream come true,” Wong said. “I learned a lot about personal development, sportsmanship and working toward a goal. I experienced traveling for my sport, hitting long-term sprint goals and felt really supported to grow as an athlete and student.”
