Flash Focus: Renee Ellis

Double major inspired by her family to create a community of Golden Flashes bonded by respect

Welcome to Flash Focus! In this series, we introduce you to fascinating student Flashes from all walks of life.

Meet Renee Ellis, a second-year fashion design and fashion merchandising double major and member of the Honors College from Chicago, Illinois.

Ellis says she has wanted to study fashion since she was a little girl and was heavily inspired by her family.

“Growing up, my mother introduced me to fashion. She is a huge fashionista and loves everything that sparkles,” Ellis said. “My grandmother is also incredibly fashionable and introduced me to styling and curating outfits.”

Ellis said that her family influence has inspired her to look at fashion through a deeper lens.

“I am interested in looking into how ethics play into fashion, how lives are affected by the fashion world, and how human ecology fits into fashion design and merchandising,” she said.

Although she is only in her second year, Ellis has been heavily involved in organizations around the Kent Campus. She is currently the executive secretary for Black United Students, an honorary executive board member for Sister Circle and a member of the student advisory board for the School of Fashion.

She is also a civic engagement fellow for Community Action Fellows through Community Engaged Learning and a writer for The Element Magazine.

When reflecting on her decision to double major, Ellis gives credit to Noël Palomo-Lovinski, Kent State University School of Fashion professor, who is also a part of the student advisory board.

“She has always encouraged me to continue to push for better,” Ellis said. “I really appreciate the support she has shown me. It always feels good when you have someone you feel is rooting for you.”

Outside of her involvement on campus, Ellis loves to cook and bake, as well as draw and paint.

“Both are very therapeutic to me, so when I get the chance, I love to be in the kitchen,” she said.

Ellis said that her most memorable experience so far here at Kent State was her opportunity to be a part of the planning of a Thanksgiving dinner for Kent State students at the United Church of Christ.

“It felt so good to be surrounded by such love, light and positivity, it reminded me of how important it is to me to be mindful of the ways we treat each other,” Ellis said. “Reaching out and pouring into the areas around us is not only empowering but it is such an impactful way to leave a positive mark on our community.”
