Flash Friday: Maddie Goerl

Senior public relations major finds a love of mentorship

Welcome to Flash Friday! This new series is where we meet Golden Flashes right where they are in their Kent State journeys. Follow along as we introduce you to fascinating Flashes from all walks of life.

Meet Maddie Goerl, a senior public relations major with a minor in public health at Kent State University. Hailing from Mars, Pennsylvania, Goerl originally chose public relations in pursuit of her passion for writing but quickly fell in love with the program during her time in the School of Media and Journalism’s reporting course, working as a student reporter for KentWired.

Goerl is president of PRSSA Kent, a nationally recognized chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America. During her involvement in PRSSA Kent, Goerl has planned chapter meetings for the organization, hosting speakers from the White House, Apple Music, FedEx Custom Critical, Condé Nast and Nestle, in addition to Pulitzer Prize-winning author Connie Schultz. Goerl works as a student writer at Flash Communications in Kent State’s Division of University Communication and Marketing. She also works as a public relations intern at Stow-Munroe Falls City Schools, capturing the magic of education and friendship through social media.

With all her experiences, however, she was still surprised at one aspect of her education.

“I didn’t expect to develop a knack for mentorship,” Goerl said. “I started helping younger students just like my mentors did for me, and it turned into a true passion. I work alongside one of my former FYE students, Macy Rosen, in PRSSA, and it has been such a pleasure to see her grow. Mentorship will always be something I create space for in such a fast-paced industry.”
