Kent State Director and Associate Professor Molly Merryman Offers Perspective on LGBTQ Community

Molly Merryman, Ph.D., the founding director of Kent State University's Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality and associate professor of sociology in the College of Arts and Sciences, was featured in a USA TODAY opinion piece which outlined black transgender women’s contributions to the LGBTQ movement.

The article focused on how in the United States there is a continued discrimination against LGTBQ members of African descent despite their pivotal role in the advancement of the LGBTQ movement.
 
Dr. Merryman provided additional insight revealing to USA TODAY that “there’s a host of other people often erased from the conversation too, like butch lesbians and young homeless men.”
 
The article cites the impending fear experienced by so many minorities in the LGBTQ community and concludes with expert advice on how to become a better ally.
