Two Kent State professors partnered with the Summit County Juvenile Court and Hands of Gratitude over the summer to teach juveniles how to assemble prosthetic hands for children in Central America.
Kristy Pytash and Lisa Testa, both associate professors in Teaching, Learning and Curriculum Studies, received a grant to do the three-week program last summer in the Summit county detention center. Along with the detention teachers and teaching students from Kent State, Pytash and Testa taught juveniles in the center about the anatomy of the hand and the trauma behind losing a limb.
The Summit County Juvenile Court staff were able to see the results of their efforts recently when they received photographs from multiple recipients.
Pytash told the Akron Beacon Journal she thought the experience was beneficial for the teachers and the juveniles. She was moved by one of the participants who liked having the chance to help someone.
