“I am so proud to work at this great institution, and receiving this recognition again as one of the Best Employers for Women helps let the world know what Kent State employees already know,” said Melody Tankersley, Ph.D., Kent State’s senior vice president and provost. “In my 30 years at Kent State, I have had the extreme pleasure to work with so many wonderful women who help make Kent State a great place to study, work and live.”

Among the 400 companies and organizations recognized on the Best Employers for Women 2023 list, Kent State ranks No. 183 in the country. Among colleges and universities that made this year’s list, Kent State comes in at No. 34. Only 35 institutions of higher education are recognized.

The university continues to be highly ranked as a top employer. In September 2022, Kent State was recognized for the 11th time as a “Great College to Work For” by The Chronicle of Higher Education, a top trade publication for colleges and universities, and ModernThink, a strategic human capital consulting firm. The 2022 results recognized Kent State in five categories: Compensation and Benefits; Confidence in Senior Leadership; Shared Governance; Faculty Experience; and Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging. Kent State was the only Ohio public university to receive the 2022 “Great Colleges to Work For” designation and one of only three Ohio institutions to receive the honor.

Kent State employs about 3,400 women, making up 58% of the university’s workforce.

The Best Employers for Women 2023 have been identified in an independent survey from a vast sample of more than 60,000 U.S. employees working for companies employing at least 1,000 people within the United States. The sample included about 40,000 women.

The evaluation was based on four different criteria: direct recommendations – work topics in general; direct recommendations – topics relevant for women in particular; indirect recommendations; and diversity among top executives/board.
