Now it's YOUR Turn for a Photo

University photographer takes his turn in front of the camera as he receives his graduate degree

Longtime Kent State University photographer Bob Christy walked the stage to receive his Master of Arts degree in Media and Journalism, concentration in Journalism Education, on Thursday at Kent State’s advanced degrees commencement ceremony.

Christy had “officially” graduated in December 2022, but was ill on the day of Fall Commencement and was unable to attend. So, he, along with his family and friends shared the ceremony this week with the Spring Class of 2023.

He is a new media specialist in Kent State's Division of University Communications and Marketing (UCM). In his 23 years with the university, he has become a familiar face on campus, and it seems like he has met nearly everyone in Kent State’s eight-campus system. Many of the photos on Kent State Today, as well as those that appear throughout the university's publications and online outlets, were taken by Christy. He has also been a mentor to UCM photography interns and Kent State photography students, both in Kent and abroad, when he visited the American Academy at the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná (PUCPR) in Curitiba, Brazil.

Christy graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree in photojournalism from Kent State in 1995 after serving in the U.S. Air Force. He covered the 1996 New Hampshire Primary for UPI and then returned to Ohio to work for the New Philadelphia Times-Reporter before joining UCM in 2000. His work has appeared in newspapers around the country and Northeast Ohio and received honors from the Ohio News Photographer's Association and the University Photographers of America Association.
