School of Music, Tuesday Musical Announce New Masterclass Series

Kent State University’s Hugh A. Glauser School of Music and Tuesday Musical, based in Akron, have launched a new series that will bring world-renowned classical musicians to the Kent Campus to work with students.

The Tuesday Musical Masterclass Series will also be live streamed to provide increased access to classrooms and homes across Ohio and beyond.

Upcoming masterclasses in the new series include composer Gregg Kallor on Oct. 30, pianist Fei Fei on Nov. 20, Escher String Quartet on March 27, and the Junction Trio on April 13 — all also featured during Tuesday Musical’s 2019-20 season.

Free and open to the public, all masterclasses are 9:30-11:30 a.m. in Ludwig Recital Hall on the Kent Campus and will be live-streamed on www.tuesdaymusical.org/education/.

The first masterclass in the new series was Wednesday, Sept. 25. Adam Barnett-Hart, first violinist and founder of the Escher String Quartet, worked with violin students of Kent State faculty members Cathy Meng Robinson and Jung-Min Amy Lee. The evening before, Barnett-Hart performed with guitarist Jason Vieaux at EJ Thomas Hall in Akron to open Tuesday Musical’s 2019-20 MainStage season.

“This is a natural extension of the work we already do with Tuesday Musical,” said Andrew Paa, marketing assistant, School of Music.

“Over the past two years, we’ve collaborated with Tuesday Musical to bring more artists from their concert series to Kent State to work with our students. When we realized that we could broaden our reach via live streaming, we started discussing how we could make this work. Out of those discussions, the series was born.”

Opera singers Lawrence Brownlee and Eric Owens, the Escher String Quartet, pianist Andreas Haefliger, and musicians from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center are among the acclaimed artists on Tuesday Musical’s concert series who have come to Kent State for masterclasses in recent years.

“I was pleased to learn of this partnership shortly after I arrived,” said Kent McWilliams, director of the School of Music. “The opportunity to work with additional internationally renowned artists will provide invaluable educational experiences for our students.”

Now entering its 132nd season, Tuesday Musical presents concerts in Akron by world-acclaimed musicians as well as education and community engagement programs throughout northeast Ohio. More at www.tuesdaymusical.org.
