Kent State campuses reopen following Monday snow closure

Kent State University campuses reopened Tuesday with classes resuming at noon following a full closure Monday due to heavy snowfall from a major winter storm that blasted across Ohio and much of the eastern United States.

The university closed all campuses Monday, Jan. 26, as the storm dumped significant snow accumulations across the region. Columbus recorded 12 inches of snow, while areas across central Ohio saw between 8 and 12 inches. Some locations in the Ohio Valley received close to two feet of snow.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine declared a state of emergency Saturday afternoon as the storm system moved through the state, ordering state agencies to provide additional resources and support to communities dealing with the heavy snowfall and frigid temperatures.

The delayed start on Tuesday allowed university facilities crews additional time to clear roadways, sidewalks and parking lots across Kent State's eight campuses. Online classes continued as scheduled throughout the closure.

Students made the most of Monday's snow day, with some taking to campus hills on sleds while grounds crews worked to manage the significant accumulation around campus buildings.
