CCI Incoming Students Scholarship
The application window for CCI Scholarships is now open for 2024-2025!
Students are encouraged to file the FAFSA now that the Department of Education has opened the application for the 2024-2025 academic year. To ensure maximum financial aid eligibility, complete the FAFSA no later than February 1, 2024.
While not all scholarships are open every semester, a wide-range of opportunities exist with varying criteria such as financial need, academic merit, program specific, or activities and interests. The application window for the 2024-2025 award cycle (summer 2024, fall 2024, spring 2025) opens on October 1, 2023 and will close on February 29, 2024. Be aware that internal scholarships throughout Kent State University as well as opportunities external to KSU may still be available for 2023-2024. Please see the Financial, Billing and Enrollment Center website for more information.
Kent State's ScholarshipUniverse is the search portal that helps match students to scholarships. To get started, you will need to complete a Student Profile. The questions asked will help match you to scholarships. While you do not have to answer all of these questions – the more you answer, the better your search results. In addition, ScholarshipUniverse is able to match students to external scholarship opportunities. Students will need to complete a separate application for each scholarship.

CCI Dean's Scholarship
The CCI Dean's Scholarship is a need-based scholarship open to admitted Kent State undergraduates in:
- School of Communication Studies
- School of Emerging Media and Technology
- School of Media and Journalism
- School of Visual Communication Design
To be considered for the CCI Dean’s Scholarships, students must apply through ScholarshipUniverse and must have a completed FAFSA on file.

Media and Journalism Honors College Scholarships
The Kent State University Honors College awards several merit scholarships of varying amounts designated specifically for students in the School of Media and Journalism who apply for and are admitted to the Honors College.

Scholastic Media Scholarship
The School of Media and Journalism offers a $1,000 scholarship to an outstanding high school senior from an Ohio Scholastic Media Association member school who will be attending Kent State.

Richard Sweet Memorial Scholarship in Art
SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA:
Graduate of a Portage County, Ohio, high school pursuing a BA or BFA in Design or a BFA in photography or fine art, in good academic standing (3.0 GPA or higher), with a portfolio of photography, design or sculpture work.
Award Amount: $920
*Demonstrate financial need based on FAFSA form in Financial Aid.

Wallace J. Hagedorn Photography Scholarship
The School of Media and Journalism and the School of Visual Communication Design award up to $200,000 to photography students annually through the Wallace J. Hagedorn Photography Scholarship. In addition to the monies available to offset tuition costs for the most talented visual storytellers, this program-enhancing gift will also provide additional resources to enrich the student experience. The Alan Canfora Activism Scholarship
The Alan Canfora Activism Scholarship celebrates the life of this noted May 4 activist, his Kent State experience and the importance of social justice and advocacy to society. The scholarship will provide up to two years of renewable support for an undergraduate, first-year or transfer student of any major on the Kent campus who has demonstrated financial need, as well as an interest in social justice and advocacy and a commitment to care and compassion toward others.
The College of Communication and Information administers this scholarship, but it is open to any college major in the university including exploratory students.
To apply you must:
- Be an entering first-year or transfer student with demonstrated financial need
- Be a full-time student enrolled at the Kent campus beginning in the fall semester
- Accept admission to Kent State by no later than May 1
- Show a demonstrated interest in advocacy and social justice, as well as a demonstrated commitment of care and compassion toward others

The Michael John Gallagher II Memorial Scholarship
Michael John Gallagher II had a passion for global communication — and his love for the discipline was central to who he was. Active within the Kent community, he flourished as a leader, ambassador, mentor and humanitarian. Michael spread kindness wherever he went, with a smile, wave or small talk. He made everyone feel like a friend. Michael graduated, magna cum laude, May 2019.
After graduating, Michael joined the Peace Corps. He dedicated himself to teaching English to the French speaking children at CEG Yebessi in Benin, West Africa.
Just two days after Michael’s 24th birthday, his life tragically came to an end. Michael’s short time on this earth left an indelible impression on so many people. The impact he made was felt around the world — in Chicago, Illinois; Kent, Ohio; Chengdu, China; Florence, Italy; Benin, West Africa; and Paris, France.
His legacy lives on
The College of Communication and Information is honored to offer this scholarship in memory of Michael.

This fund was established by a transfer of the Educational Trust of the Inner City Protestant Parish to the Cleveland Foundation to provide scholarship support to enable deserving individuals who are residents of Cleveland or its inner-ring suburbs to further and/or complete their formal education. Currently, the beneficiary pool is identified as high school seniors and adults to the age of 28, who are pursuing an undergraduate college degree, or vocational/technical training. Appalachian Students
The Ariana R. Ulloa Scholarship
The Ariana R. Ulloa Scholarship Fund was established to honor the legacy of its namesake, Ariana Ulloa, a native of Mexico. Ariana moved to Athens in 1986 and began working for the Hocking College Department of International Programs in 1990, eventually moving into the position of Director. She had a reputation for her kind and encouraging nature and was known to many students as “Mamá Ariana.” The scholarships are offered to international students pursuing any field of study, as well as students pursuing a degree in international studies or international relations. Students must be residing or studying in the 32 counties of Appalachian Ohio, or in Franklin, Fairfield or Delaware counties.David V. Stivison Appalachian Community Action Scholarship Fund
Provides financial assistance to students who are residents in the Corporation for Ohio Appalachian Development's service area and want to attend college but lack the required resources. Individual income must not exceed 200 percent of Federal Poverty Level.FAO Scholarships
FAO provides 16 scholarships in house to students who reside in Appalachian regions in Ohio. The scholarships have different requirements and are posted on their website. In memory of legendary West Virginia Senator Robert C. Byrd, the Turkish Coalition of America is honored to institute the TCAdvance - Robert C. Byrd Memorial Scholarship Program. The Fontana Transport Inc. Scholars Program is open to underrepresented, low-income and first-generation college-bound students. Students must be pursuing an undergraduate degree full-time in transportation, math, science, engineering, architecture, environmental design, PreMed, psychology, Spanish language/literature. The applicant does not have to be a U.S. citizen but must have a minimum 3.5 GPA and proof of attending college beginning in the fall semester. Recommendation by a faculty member is optional but highly suggested.Garmon-Murvay Scholarship
This is a scholarship for School of Communication Studies students with junior standing with 60 hours or higher completed and an overall gap of 3.0. Applicant will submit an essay with their application that responds to the following questions. 1. How being a student at KU has influenced him/her in his/her view of the world beyond Kent, Ohio. 2. The importance of communication studies as a discipline, especially when considering gender communication and cultural communication in a diverse and changing world. 3. Foster Youth and Adopted Students
The Adoption Network Law Center
This scholarship started in an effort to give back to the adoption community and to show support to Birth Parents and Adoptees who are interested in pursuing higher education. You must be a Birth Parent or an Adopted Child and have been accepted to a university, vocational, technical or trade school. This is a video submission with a short application as well.Adoption Star
Through its academic scholarship program, Adoption STAR recognizes college bound individuals who were adopted by providing academic scholarships. Adoption STAR will award two to six academic scholarships ($500 – $1,500) to college bound individuals.Foster Care to Success Scholarships
