Early Childhood (preK – 5)

The Bachelor of Science in Education degree in Early Childhood Education (ECED) prepares future teachers to teach students from preschool through grade 5. The program was the first undergraduate teacher education program in the world to offer International Baccalaureate certification, and includes over 500 field hours with children.

There are nine (9) required hours of mathematics education courses in the ECED program. Students enrolled in these courses are provided experiences in the university classroom and field that enhance their understanding of children’s mathematical thinking at various stages of development and appropriate pedagogies to facilitate engagement in more sophisticated mathematical thinking in these stages.

ECED 30202: Mathematics & Science in the Early Years

Instructional psychology and materials for effective teaching of mathematics and science in preschool and early primary settings with a theoretical emphasis on cognitive development. [3 Credit Hours]

ECED 40303: Teaching Mathematics in the Elementary Years I

Instructional psychology and materials for effective teaching of mathematics in grades K-5 with a theoretical emphasis on cognitive development; application of curriculum planning, teaching strategies, and task analysis. [3 Credit Hours]

ECED 40404: Teaching Mathematics in the Elementary Years II

Instructional psychology and materials for effective teaching of mathematics in grades K-5 with a theoretical emphasis on cognitive development. [3 Credit Hours]
