Slates North
Boundary Line
Property Description:
The Slates North property is approximately 15 acres and is located northeast of the Slates South property in Franklin Township in Portage County, Ohio. The property can be accessed by parking on Powder Mill Road and walking along the power line clearing (through Slates South). This site is bordered on the north by an active railroad, and is east of what once was the Kent State University golf course. This site is also within the Cuyahoga watershed and consists of mixed hardwood forest, various open water/vernal ponds and wet areas, a large wetland area on the east side of the property, and a creek located near the southwest corner that empties into the large wetland. It is unknown whether beavers are responsible for this large wetland, but the flooded area has been there since 1994 according to old satellite imagery. There is a maintained, most likely by the power company, mowed grass area located in the middle of the western area of the property as well, and this property is an important stormwater drainage basin for Kent State.
