Care for the Collection

Help us preserve the legacy

The Kent State University Museum is a world-class destination for the study and presentation of historic and contemporary fashion, textiles and related art forms. Beautiful and unique, the textiles and clothing in the museum collection are quite fragile. Fibers begin to deteriorate the minute the cotton is plucked, the sheep is shorn or the silk cocoon is unwound. Proper storage slows deterioration by preventing hazards such as exposure to light, dust, and changes in temperature and humidity and preserves priceless artifacts for generations to come.

Current static storage units at the museum, made of formaldehyde-laced particle board, are more than 30 years old. To ensure safe and conservation-appropriate storage for the museum's collection, Care for the Collection will support the purchase and installation of new, metal space-saver mechanical assist, high-density mobile storage units. These new units will add as much as 30% to the storage capacity in each of our four storage areas, and will greatly improve storage conditions aligning them with current museum standards. Most importantly, the new units will allow easier access to the collection and help in research, assessment and study for future generations of faculty and students.

Please help us sustain our large and growing collection of fashion history with a gift today. You may make a gift online at ksu.convio.net/CarefortheCollection.

Thank you!
