BURTON - Maple syruping has been a long, proud tradition in Geauga County since its pioneer origins. Kent State University at Geauga is equally proud to play an enduring role in this ongoing venture that makes Geauga County the number one maple production region in the entire state of Ohio.  For decades, the Burton Chamber of Commerce has been harvesting sap from the 80-acre stand of sugar maples on the Kent State Geauga campus. It’s all part of a 92-year tradition that started back in 1931 and has earned the village the nickname, Pancaketown USA.  Burton Chamber constructed a ...

DI Crew members and Collaborators pose smiling

Collaborators bring a unique design challenge to DI Crew members with an important focus: accessibility. Ryan Davis, Exercise Physiology graduate student, and his student approached two DI Crew members, Nick Cindrich and Julian Leff, with a disability issue regarding a classroom tool. The issue was that his student was not able to fully use skinfold calipers for his class to measure how much fat is on the body because the calipers were too difficult to use with his specific dexterity disability. Even multiple staff commented on how difficult it was to use the skinfold calipers. ...

The May 4 Memorial on the Kent State University Campus.

Kent State University’s School of Peace and Conflict Studies was created as a living memorial to the four students killed on May 4, 1970.  As the university prepares to mark the 53rd anniversary of the shootings, the school’s director says honoring the legacy of May 4 is still key to the school’s identity and mission.  “The origin story is essential to our identity and to our work and what constitutes our mission,” said R. Neil Cooper, Ph.D., director of the school.  The school traces its roots to the aftermath of the May 4, 1970, shootings when Ohio National Guards...

Abstract: Peptides are versatile biocompatible and biodegradable biopolymers that have a wide variety of applications in biotechnology and medicine. One of our objectives is to incorporate several biologically active key protein domains into short peptides for the development of modular materials for applications in cancer research. The engineered peptides are synthesized in our lab using automated solid phase microwave assisted peptide synthesis. We apply orthogonal chemistry strategies for the conjugation of several different small peptides and/or small molecules to produce tailored macro...
