Kent State University’s efforts to conserve energy over the winter break saved the university $45,965 in electric and steam costs over nine days. The reduction in greenhouse gas emissions during this period was equal to more than a million miles driven by an average passenger vehicle. Kent State’s Office of Sustainability encouraged faculty, staff and building curators to shut down all appliances and electronics before leaving for winter break to help the university conserve energy. Of the six businesses that were finalists in ProtoTech: Pitch, the Incubator at MAGNET’s technology start-up pitch competition, half were founded by Kent State students. Only faculty and staff can request alumni data, which can be used for such purposes as accreditation surveys, event invitations or department mailings. In celebration of National Engineers Week, Kent State University at Tuscarawas is holding the 34th annual Engineering Technology Opportunity Expo on Feb. 25 from 5:30-8 p.m. in the Student Union of Founders Hall. A Kent State University student’s interpretive sign project is helping the university become more environmentally friendly. Krisztina Janossy, who graduated this past December, started her interpretive design project for sustainable features on the Kent Campus. Janossy created signs at three sites located behind Henderson Hall and the Liquid Crystal Institute®: the butterfly garden, peatland wetland and permeable pavement. Kent State University’s Office of the University Architect and University Facilities Management, both part of the Division of Business and Finance, collaborated in an effort to unearth several large trees on Summit Street and relocate them outside the Center for the Performing Arts on Main Street. The trees, which are 5-12 inch caliper in diameter and up to 20 feet tall, were transplanted to prepare for road expansions and other construction on Summit Street as part of the Summit Street Improvement Project.
