Dr. John Jewell
Biography
Dr. Jewell is the Associate Dean for Academic Student Support Services in University College at Kent State University. In this role, he directs long-term strategic planning and short-term goal setting for University College. He works collaboratively on university-wide student success initiatives, leads marketing efforts for the college, and helps design and implement assessment procedures and fosters the development and dissemination of scholarly work to showcase University College as a national model for student success initiatives.
In addition to overseeing daily operations of the College, Dr. Jewell also works with more than 30 staff across our offices including our Academic Success Center, Career Exploration, Student Progression and College Operations, and the college Technology, Media, and Design group.
A first-generation college student himself, he found his passion for robotics at Lebanon Valley College in Annville, PA and earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems and Psychology. His interest in the artificial analogs to human behavior and sensory systems lead to a Master of Science in Experimental Psychology at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA and ultimately to a Doctorate of Philosophy in Cognitive Psychology from Kent State University. Dr. Jewell continued his interest in sensory systems and robotics with a postdoctoral research fellowship in the Department of Neurology at the University of Pennsylvania’s Medical of School.
Dr. Jewell has taken an applied approach to behavior by integrating his backgrounds in Psychology, Computer Science, and Cognitive Neuroscience. He has held faculty positions at Ursinus College, Saint Joseph’s University, and The College of Wooster. His work has included the development and implementation of a Neuroscience major, a Human Factors, Innovation, and Creativity curriculum, an Entrepreneurship curriculum and entrepreneurial experiences for students, undergraduate research mentorship, undergraduate internships, first-year initiatives, and programs to promote student success and engagement. As an advisor and mentor, Dr. Jewell has used the story of his unique path to help students craft their own path.
