Barefeet Dance Tribe

Barefeet Dance Tribe is a pioneering African dance organization rooted in culture, community, and movement. Founded in Kent, Ohio in 2009, Barefeet Dance Tribe holds the distinction of being Kent State University’s first African dance organizationOur mission is to celebrate and share the richness of African culture through traditional and contemporary dance, music, and storytelling. We use dance as a powerful way to educate, inspire, and connect people while creating greater awareness and appreciation for the diversity of African cultures. Barefeet Dance Tribe brings together the energy of traditional African dance with the evolving sounds and movements of modern African music, including the growing influence of Afrobeats in the United States. Our performances are vibrant, energetic, and rooted in cultural expression, featuring music from artists across the African continent. Over the years, Barefeet has grown from a student organization into a recognized cultural dance collective, reaching audiences throughout Northeast Ohio and beyond. We continue to create spaces where people can experience African culture through movement, discover new music and dance styles, and celebrate the beauty and diversity of the African diaspora. At the heart of Barefeet Dance Tribe is the belief that dance is more than movement—it is culture, history, identity, and connection. Through every performance, workshop, and community engagement, we strive to educate others, inspire creativity, and keep African culture moving forward.
