Operating Funds Criteria

Operating Dollars Tier System

Organizations can receive increasing amounts of funding based on the completion of specific requirements, categorized into three tiers. Each tier has its own set of criteria related to goals and objectives, identified by Student Organization Support, related to registration, training, goal setting, and engagement activities.

Tier 1: (Foundation)

Organizations must complete the following to be eligible for $200 operating dollars:

Tier 2: (Growth and Goal Setting)

ORGANIZATIONS MUST COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR AN ADDITIONAL $200 OPERATING DOLLARS: 

  • Meet Tier 1 requirements and receive tier 1 funds 

  • Have a minimum of eight (8) members listed on their KSU Engage roster 

  • Register for and attend mandatory Fall 2026 student organization training  

  • *Attendance at a make-up session offered by CSI will be accepted 

AND -  

Complete at least two (2) of the following: 

  • Submit SMART Goals for your organization, including: 

    • Community Engagement Goal

    • Academic Achievement Goal

    • Leadership Development Goal

    • Community Service Goal

    • *Example Document  

  • Submit a success story for at least one organization event or impactful experience to possibly be featured on the CSI Social Media channels, highlighting: 

    • Attendance

    • Intended outcomes

    • Photos or Testimonials 

  • Co-host at least one collaborative event with another student organization and/or department 

  • Host or participate in at least one outreach or tabling event to promote involvement and visibility

    • Blastoff, Homecoming Parade, Spring Organization Fair, etc. 

Tier 3: (Engagement, Impact, Accountability)

Organizations must complete the following to be eligible for an additional $400 operating dollars: 

  • Meet Tier 2 requirements and receive tier 2 funds 

  • Have a minimum of 15 total members listed on their KSU Engage roster  

AND -  

Complete each of the following:  

  • Meet with a Student Organization Support (SOS) staff member to discuss your organization's goals

  • Complete and submit documentation of one (1) community service project

    • Opportunities available through Helper Helper

    • *Half of your organization’s roster must be in attendance 

  • Attend two (2) additional trainings or workshops offered by CSI or the Pepsi Leadership Center

    • Minimum 2 officers must be in attendance 

  • Attend one (1) public Undergraduate Student Government meeting AND schedule a 30-minute meeting with USG allocations advisor, Alex Harper.

    • Minimum 2 officers must be in attendance for the public meeting 

FAQs

Q: What is the Tiered Funding System?

A. The Tiered Funding System allows student organizations to receive increasing amounts of operating dollars by completing specific requirements across three tiers: Foundation, Growth & Goal Setting, and Engagement & Impact.

Q: Who manages the Tiered Funding System?

A. The program is managed by Student Organization Support (SOS) within the Center for Student Involvement (CSI). For additional guidance or support, email csi@kent.edu.

Q: How do we submit information when we have completed one of the requirements?

A. All submissions will be made through designated forms in KSU Engage.

Q: How much funding is available in total?

A. Organizations can earn up to $800 in operating dollars by completing all requirements through Tier 3.

Q:  Do we need to apply separately for each tier?

A. No, organizations are automatically considered for higher tiers once they complete the requirements of the previous tier. You will, however, submit a new operating dollars request through your organization’s KSU Engage page when you have reached a new tier.

Q: How will the funds be distributed?

A. Once your tier status is confirmed and your funding request is approved, your organization will receive specific communication on how funds will be dispersed.

Q: Can we spend the funds however we want?

A. No. Funds must be used to support your organization’s approved goals and activities, in accordance with university policies.

Q: What if we don’t complete a tier until spring semester?

A. You may still qualify for funding as long as requirements are met within the academic year deadlines set by CSI. All form submissions for operating dollars will close automatically on April 15, 2027.

Q. If my organization received Tier 2 or Tier 3 funding during the 25-26 academic year, do I have to start over?

A. No, if your organization received Tier 2 or Tier 3 funding during the 2025-2026 academic year, you are automatically granted access to apply for that respective tier for the 2026-2027 academic year. Please note: In order to maintain your eligibility for the 2027-2028 academic year, you must complete the requirements for that tier before April 15th, 2027.
