Program Description

Full Description

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Music gives music majors an opportunity to study music and liberal arts with an optional minor, available in most academic areas of the university, or as a dual degree program with a major in another field. Although not as music intensive as the Bachelor of Music (B.M.) degree, the B.A. degree includes study on a main instrument and ensemble participation throughout the program.

The Music major includes the following optional concentrations:

  • The Contemporary Popular Music concentration provides students the opportunity to study contemporary instruments such as electric guitar, electric bass and voice, as well as participate in a variety of styles, including rock, pop, Motown and other popular styles.
  • The Jazz Studies concentration provides students the opportunity to study jazz improvisation, arranging and composing.

Students not selecting a concentration will continue with applied music and major ensemble electives, in addition to a music history course and research or senior recital as the culminating experience.

Admissions

Admission Requirements

Applications to the Jazz Studies concentration are not being accepted at this time.

The university affirmatively strives to provide educational opportunities and access to students with varied backgrounds, those with special talents and adult students who graduated from high school three or more years ago.

Admission to this major is selective. Students must audition before being admitted to the Music major. Inquiries can be directed to the coordinator of admissions and scholarships, School of Music, E-101 Music and Speech, Kent State University, Kent, OH 44242-0001 (or call 330-672-2172).

International Students: All international students must provide proof of English language proficiency (unless they meet specific exceptions to waive) by earning a minimum 71 TOEFL iBT score, minimum 6.0 IELTS score, minimum 47 PTE score or minimum 100 DET score, or by completing the ELS level 112 Intensive English Program. Major ensemble: Students must enroll in an ensemble appropriate to their major performance area. Students in the Contemporary Popular Music concentration take one semester of major ensemble and seven separate semesters of MUS 35213. MUS 25011 and MUS 25225 can be used for major ensemble credit. Program Description

Full Description

The Associate of Applied Business degree in Office Technology focuses primarily on front-end office functions, where employees use technology for daily job responsibilities that may include producing business documents, designing presentations, generating data reports and creating financial spreadsheets. Students use the most current versions of business software applications and learn the fundamentals of accounting, automated records management, business communications and resource management.

Graduates gain a wide variety of computer application skills needed for gainful employment in office administrative support positions, including office assistant, accounting clerk, office manager, administrative coordinator, executive administrative and administrative assistant–technology.

The Office Technology major includes the following optional concentration:

  • The Medical Billing/ Coding Office concentration provides a basic understanding of software, medical terminology, billing/coding and procedures used in medical settings such as hospitals, clinics, doctors' offices and outsourcing facilities involved with providing billing operations.

Full Description

The Associate of Applied Business degree in Information Technology provides students with a core curriculum of programming, operating systems and networks, website development, hardware, security fundamentals, and workgroup productivity technologies.

The degree program articulates to the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology degree and the certificate in Computer Forensics and Information Security.

The Information Technology major comprises the following concentrations:

  • The Application Development Technology concentration prepares students for various professional certifications and positions such as computer programmer/application developer using industry-standard languages and technologies.
  • The General Technology concentration prepares students for various professional certifications and entry-level positions in which the computer staff are expected to perform a wide variety of technical duties.
  • The Internet/Multimedia Technology concentration prepares students for various professional certifications and positions in Web development, social media and digital media.

The Associate of Applied Business degree in Cybersecurity provides students with an applied approach to information security concepts. With an ever-growing threat to sensitive and critical data in the field of information technology, understanding the impact of security issues on businesses and individuals is critical. Program Information for Business Administration - M.B.A.

Program Description

Full Description

The Master of Business Administration degree prepares students for responsible leadership positions in private, nonprofit and public  organizations. Upon completion of the M.B.A. degree, graduates demonstrate a global mindset and competence in critical thinking, digital technology, communication, teamwork and ethical and sustainable management.

The program welcomes students from the full range of undergraduate degrees. Regardless of their undergraduate education, students will find a challenging program designed to prepare them for management positions in organizations.

The degree is structured for full-time/in-person and full-time or part-time online students:

  • The full-time/in-person program is targeted to early career professionals, both nationally and internationally, who wish to jump-start their business career, and to those who wish to make a business-related career change. The program operates in cohorts so that students proceed through the sequence of required courses as a group. Students take six to seven courses each semester (offered in eight-week modules) and are expected to participate in experiential activities such as internships, mentoring and professional development activities. Delivery of the program is accelerated; students are able to earn the M.B.A. degree in 12 to 16 months.
  • The online program is designed for those who want maximum flexibility in pursuing their M.B.A. degree. Students can take courses to suit their life: from one course at a time to a full-time course load. This is an ideal program for professionals who intend to keep working full-time while pursing the M.B.A., and for those students who want to pursue their M.B.A. without commuting to campus.

Graduation Requirements

  • Students in the M.A. Translation and M.B.A dual degree program must earn a total of 61-64 credit hours. There is a minimum requirement of 31-33 credit hours from the M.B.A. program and 30-33 credit hours from the M.A. in Translation.
  • A minimum 3.000 GPA must be maintained.
  • The M.B.A. program should be initiated before 12 credit hours in the M.A. Translation program have been completed. The M.A. in Translation is awarded upon completion of the requirements of that degree. The M.B.A. is awarded upon completion of the joint M.B.A./M.A. Translation degree program.

Program Description

Full Description

The Associate of Applied Business degree in Business Management Technology provides students with a core consisting of communication, management, accounting, marketing, e-commerce, economics and liberal arts courses. Students may have the opportunity to participate in internships to link theory with hands-on practice.

The Business Management Technology major comprises the following concentrations:

  • The Business Administration concentration articulates with the Bachelor of Business Administration degree at Kent State.
  • The Logistics and Supply Chain Management concentration allows students to become knowledgeable in the process and supervision of the movement of products from the point origin to the point of consumption for consumers, business and other organizations.
  • The Management and Entrepreneurship concentration comprises coursework in management, entrepreneurship and and productivity applications.
  • The Marketing/Sales concentration comprises coursework in management, advertising, customer service and productivity applications.

  1. Apply generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) to analyze and record business transactions, prepare financial statements and complete all other procedural steps in the accounting cycle of a company.

Program Information for Teaching English as Second Language Endorsement Preparation - Graduate Non-Degree

Program Description

Full Description

The Teaching English as Second Language Endorsement Preparation non-degree program allows teachers with a current Ohio teaching license to advance their knowledge of language and second language learning in the P-12 context. Completion of the coursework is a prerequisite to being recommended by Kent State University for supplemental license in multi-age teaching English to speakers of other language; and licenses are granted by the Ohio Department of Education.

The non-degree program is not a master's degree. Students interested in obtaining a teaching license and a master's degree from Kent State University must also be fully admitted into the M.A. degree in Teaching English as a Second Language, TESL Education concentration.

Professional Licensure Disclosure

This program is designed to prepare students to sit for applicable licensure or certification in Ohio. If you plan to pursue licensure or certification in a state other than Ohio, please review state educational requirements for licensure or certification and contact information for state licensing boards at Kent State's website for professional licensure disclosure.

An assessment of professional dispositions occurs in this course to demonstrate students' understanding of codes of ethics and professional standards appropriate to TESL and work with English Language Learners. Assessed in this course are competencies such as data literacy and analysis; use of research and assessment data; leadership and collaboration; utilization and support of appropriate technology for the discipline,;and an understanding of laws related to English Language Learners.

Students undertake 100 hours of fieldwork as teacher assistants in area schools to gain collaborative clinical experience as P-12 teachers. Prior to enrollment in ENG 68592, students must be evaluated satisfactorily on non-academic dimensions, including completing background checks.

Candidates seeking Ohio teaching licensure are required to pass specific requirements in order to apply for licensure from the Ohio Department of Education (ODE).
