The amount of federal income tax withheld from your paycheck is determined by the information that you provide on Federal Form W-4. Kent State University is unable to assist you in completing your W-4. However, the IRS provides a tax withholding estimator on its website.
To review your W-4, go to Top Employee Resources within FlashLine, choose Tax Forms, and then W-4 Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate. To make changes to your W-4, click the Update link at the bottom of the page. Read and complete each section carefully before clicking the Certify Changes button to save your work.
NOTE - The IRS made changes to the format of the W-4 and to its related tax calculations on Jan. 1, 2020.
- If you have not updated your W-4 information since before Jan. 1, 2020, your federal income tax withholding is calculated according to the methodology that existed before that date.
- Any change to your W-4 information made on or after Jan. 1, 2020, will result in your federal income tax withholding being calculated under the IRS’s revised methodology. The first change you make under the new methodology may not result in the tax withholding you desire and you may need to make a second change.
Changes made to your W-4 information will be effective only for future paychecks. If Payroll has already started processing the current pay period, any change will be effective in the following pay.
It is your responsibility, and good practice, to review your tax withholding on your pay stubs throughout the year. If you make a change to your W-4 withholding and find that it did not result in the tax withholding that you expected, you can update your W-4 again.
