Community Health Worker Certifications

A community health worker is defined by the American Public Health Association as “a frontline public health worker who is a trusted member and/or has an unusually close understanding of the community served. This trusting relationship enables the worker to serve as a liaison/link/intermediary between health/social services and the community to facilitate access to services and improve the quality and cultural competence of service delivery.”

CHWs….

• Work directly with individuals and families to access health care

• Provide culturally appropriate health education and information

• Advocate for individual and family needs

• Give trusted advice and care for chronic diseases

CHWs work in community health centers, hospitals, non-profit organizations, public health clinics, private clinics, public housing organizations, hospitals, client’s homes, faith-based organizations, and employer or sponsoring agencies.

Job Titles

Community Health Workers have many titles, depending on where they work, who they work for and what they do. In Ohio, CHWs are known by many titles which include but are not limited to:

The overall job outlook for community health workers is positive with continued growth.

In order to obtain certification, students must complete six credit hours of CHW courses, 130 hours of clinical/field service work, pass a successful background check clearance and complete an online Ohio Board of Nursing application ($35 fee). The background check fee and application fee are not included in program cost. The classroom training may be offered during the day, in the evenings or 100% online. Clinicals/field service work are available during the day mostly and limited availability in the evenings and weekends.

PH 23000 COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKER CERTIFICATION I  3 Credit Hours

Students will be guided through the competencies of a Community Health Worker (CHW). Students will be introduced to soft skills and culture including but not limited to basic health care, community resources, advocacy, communication and service skills related to working with communities. Lifespan development will also be covered including but not limited to: Basic health information and education regarding prevention and treatment throughout the lifespan. Prerequisite: None

PH 20392 COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKER CERTIFICATION II-INTERNSHIP 

(ELR) 3 Credit Hours

Internship course providing necessary contact hours for the Ohio Community Health Worker Certification.

Prerequisite: PH 23000.

Existing Kent State Students:

During “My Time to Register” add PH 23000 (typically offered in the fall semester only)
