Summer 2023

Message from the Dean

Dear friends,

As the spring semester has come to a close, I am pleased to share with you very important news for the future of the College of Public Health. I am thankful to announce the creation of the Timothy Mikes College of Public Health Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship fund has been established thanks to the generous contribution of Gerri and Tom Mikes in memory of their beloved son, Timothy Mikes. I am profoundly grateful to the Mikes family and honored to preserve and continue Tim’s legacy and passion for helping others.

In this issue of the e-newsletter, you will read about the many remarkable achievements of CPH faculty, staff, students, and alumni. I want to congratulate Andrew M. Snyder, CPH outreach program director, who was awarded the Ohio Public Health Association’s Distinguished Achievement in Health Equity Service, and CPH junior Anaya Spencer for being named Kent State University’s 2023-2024 Newman Civic Fellow.

I also wish to take a moment to salute the College of Public Health class of 2023. Public health students were awarded an impressive number of degrees in the Kent State University spring commencement ceremony: 74 Bachelor of Science in Public Health, 50 Master of Public Health, seven Master of Science, four Ph.D., and one certificate. These students now join the more than 2400 CPH alumni. I am very proud of all your hard work and dedication, and I wish you all the best in your future career as public health professionals!

I hope you enjoy catching up on the latest CPH news. To stay always connected to events, resources, and updates from the College, follow us on social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter) and please make sure to join CPH new LinkedIn page.

Thank you for all your ongoing support to the college. I wish you and your loved ones a safe and enjoyable summer.

Yours in good health,

Sonia Alemagno

Dean, College of Public Health
