Noted graphic designer and Visual Communication Design alum Paul Sahre, B.F.A. '87, M.F.A. '90, was recently recognized for his work in the New York Times article "The Best Book Covers of 2023."
Sahre's cover of "The Employees" by the Danish poet and novelist Olga Ravn was described by The Book Review's art director as designed with "perverse joy" and "venom and spite," capturing the angst of office culture on board an intergalactic spaceship.
Sahre has been designing book jackets for many years for authors such as Chuck Klosterman, Malcolm Gladwell, Rick Moody, Muriel Spark, Clarice Lispector and many others. He began designing book covers when living in New York City.
“There was a theater I was doing freelance work for at the time, and art directors in New York were seeing my theater posters and hiring me to do book jackets. It all sort of happened naturally from there," he recalled.
Sahre's own book “Two-Dimensional Man: A Graphic Memoir" was also paired with Taylor Hall Gallery's first exhibition after the building's redesign in 2017, an exhibit that spanned his entire career up to that point.
He is the owner of O.O.P.S. (Office of Paul Sahre) design consultancy in New York City. His clients include Google Creative Lab, Simon and Schuster, Time Magazine, This American Life, Criterion Collection, They Might Be Giants and Marvel Comics.
