We are thrilled to announce that Frances Brunner, junior fashion design student, has made it to the finals of the Redress Design Award 2023, the world’s largest sustainable fashion design competition. This Award challenges emerging designers to create value from waste and design toward a more sustainable, circular fashion for the future.
Frances’ sustainable collection is made using upcycling and reconstruction techniques and incorporates “Deniim”, an innovative textile she makes from shredded and felted scrap denim. Frances’ Redress Design Award collection, ‘It’s All Fluff’, explores how the ego is expressed in fashion, using secondhand clothing including the self-made modified denim textile. Frances also screen-prints on the garments using biodegradable water-based ink. For the products’ end-of-life, she invites consumers to return them to her studio to be upcycled or to send them on to other denim recycling programs to be manufactured into industry-grade insulation.
The 10 finalists, shortlisted from over 400 applications from 46 countries and regions, will bring their application concepts to life and join an expenses-paid educational trip to Hong Kong in September to showcase their collection at the Grand Finale Fashion Show, where the winners will be announced.
About the Redress Design Award
The Redress Design Award is the world’s largest sustainable fashion design competition, educating emerging fashion designers around the world about sustainable design theories and techniques in order to drive growth toward a circular fashion system. By putting sustainable design talent in the global spotlight, the Redress Design Award creates a unique platform for passionate and talented fashion game-changers to transform the global fashion industry and rewards the best with career-changing prizes to maximize long-term impact.
Each competition cycle takes participants on an educational journey lasting several months of theory and design. Redress Design Award works to educate designers about fashion’s negative environmental impacts, whilst teaching them about zero-waste, upcycling, and reconstruction. Through university talks, sustainable fashion workshops, the online Redress Academy, Pathway Course, and in partnership with more than 150 universities around the world, Redress Design Award provides young designers with the theory and techniques to help them understand the new circular economy and its global potential for the fashion industry.
Redress Design Award also hosts free courses on "Circular Fashion and Fiber and Sustainability". The new session starts on June 1st, 2023. These are free online courses and participants learn at their own pace and get a certificate of completion once they pass the quiz.
