Visiting Domestic & International Students
Studying at another university? Our Study Away program is also open to students from across the globe. Join us for a semester at our New York City, Florence, and Paris programs and learn more about the international world of fashion.
VISITING U.S. STUDENTS
If you’re visiting us from a different university in the U.S., please contact fsstudyaway@Kent.edu
WHAT DO I NEED TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR STUDY AWAY?
To take part in our Study Away programs, you’ll need to:
- Have graduated from high school or achieved your GED certificate (or international equivalent)
- Currently be enrolled at another higher educational institution
- Have achieved a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA by the Commitment Contract and program fee deadlines
If you can say yes to all three, we’ll ask you to enroll at Kent State University as a guest student. You’ll only be allowed to enroll for up to 18 semester hours and won’t receive a Kent State degree at the end of your program. We also can’t offer guest students financial aid through Kent State University, but you may still be able to apply through your home institution.
APPLICATION PROCESS
We’re here to make the application process as simple as possible. If you’ve got any questions, all you have to do is get in touch. Here’s everything you’ll need to do to join our Study Away programs.

- Use our Guest Application form to become a Kent State University undergraduate guest.
- Complete the Pre-Approval Application, which is available between September 15 and December 15 every year.

If you’ve been accepted, you’ll also receive further details about how to complete your required Commitment Contract – a formal agreement that confirms you’d like to take part in the Study Away program.
- After we receive your Commitment Contract, we’ll ask you to confirm your place by paying the Program Fee. You’ll need to use a credit card and complete this step online.
- If you’ve applied to our Florence or Paris programs, you’ll need to apply to the Office of Global Education. You’ll be sent an application link by OGE as soon as your School of Fashion Study Away application is completed and approved.
We need to receive your Commitment Contract and Program Fee by the required deadlines. If we don’t, you’ll be dropped from the Study Away program.

VISA AND IMMIGRATION
-
Our New York City Program
-
If you’re not a U.S. citizen, you’ll need a J-1 student visa to study anywhere in the US with Kent State University. Once you’ve been accepted onto the Study Away program, we’ll send you a Kent State University admission letter and some additional paperwork to complete, which will allow you to apply for a J-1 Exchange Visitor visa.
-
While the Office of Global Education can offer lots of helpful advice, they’re not allowed to apply for your student visa on your behalf. You’re the only one that can apply for this student visa, and it’s up to you to make sure you do so in time.
-
If you don’t have the right paperwork, please don’t travel! You may be asked to return home on the next available flight, which you’ll have to pay for. The United States Department of State and Customs and Border Protection have final authority on issues of international study, so we won’t be able to intervene.
