Columbiana, East Liverpool Campuses Award Scholarships to Local Students
In February, the Kent State Columbiana County campuses hosted the fifth annual County Classic basketball game between the East Liverpool and Salem high school boys’ teams. As part of this event, the local Kent State campuses awarded $500 scholarships to two students from each of the high schools.
Donald Bean, assistant director of Enrollment Management and Student Services at Kent State East Liverpool, recently presented certificates to Brady Fredritz and Olivia Baumgarner, senior scholarship recipients at East Liverpool High School.
Fredritz plans to study education and Baumgarner will study psychology and business at a Columbiana County campus.
Two recipients from Salem High School will be recognized at their senior awards ceremony in May.
Auxiliary at Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital Gifts $25,000 to Nursing Program
The Auxiliary at Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital recently donated $25,000 to Kent State University at Trumbull’s Nursing program. The gift will establish a new scholarship endowment that will provide support to nursing students from Trumbull and Mahoning Counties. The volunteer organization was established in 2017. It supports health and wellness initiatives within the local community. Proceeds from The Gift Shop at Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital made the donation possible.
“Scholarships are so critical to student success,” Dave Smith, Director of Philanthropy at the Trumbull Campus said. “The need is greater now than ever as students continue to face unforeseen financial challenges associated with the current pandemic. This generous gift will provide much-needed assistance to future nurses that will work in our local hospitals and healthcare facilities.”

EHHS and Gerald H. Read Center Lead the Way in Opening the Campus to International Fulbright Scholars
The College of Education, Health and Human Services and the Gerald H. Read Center for International and Intercultural Education recently welcomed 19 Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement scholars from Eastern Europe and Central Asia to Kent State.
The international educators are taking part in a high-impact, hybrid in-person and virtual experience focused on teaching and learning in media literacy in K-12. The scholars are partnering with local teachers from Aurora, Kenston, Hudson, Stow-Munro Falls, and Streetsboro to share teaching and learning experiences and promote global-mindedness via co-teaching opportunities.
Local community members have paired with the scholars to share American culture and experience the Kent State community. Under the direction of Amanda Johnson-Toala, Ph.D., and Marty Jencius, Ph.D., the Fulbright scholars will spend six weeks at the KSU Hotel and Conference Center.
This grant is possible through the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs and IREX.

Looking to incorporate more plant-based meals into your diet? This month-long challenge is designed to educate on the benefits of following a plant-based diet without eliminating all animal-based foods.
Participants are encouraged to eat at least one plant-based meal a day. To qualify, the meal must be at least 50 percent vegetables or fruit, and have one serving of plant-based protein (the meal doesn't need to be completely vegan).
Participants will be eligible to win random prizes throughout the challenge. Those who take part in all four weeks and achieve an overall participation score of 65 percent will also be eligible for 20 Tier 2 points.
This challenge is administered by Be Well Solutions and is open to full-time, benefits-eligible employees only. Please register no later than May 4, 2021. Register for the Powered by Plants challenge.
