Delivering his remarks to a packed FirstEnergy Auditorium, CNN’s chief media correspondent and anchor of the weekly program “Reliable Sources,” Brian Stelter, talked about the current media environment and delivered 11 keys for ethical journalism in the fake news era (see sidebar/graphic). In his lecture, entitled “Telling the Truth in the Age of Alternative Facts,” Stelter also encouraged students to find the one thing they were more passionate about than anyone they knew and really dive into it. Since Sarah — along with her dad and sister — has been a caregiver for her mother for the past 15 years, this has greatly influenced her decision to pursue a future in nursing. Having worked as a home healthcare provider and as a nurse’s aide, Sarah is a first-year nursing student, initially pursuing an associate’s degree in the short term; a bachelor’s and maybe a master’s degree in the long term. At a...

Young students in front of blackboard

Extra help is here for struggling students who usually slip through the cracks and face uncertain futures after their elementary years. Rural students, in particular, face generational poverty, lack of role models, and insufficient academic preparation for success in college or at work. These patterns are evident at the Kent State regional campuses where 81 percent of students receive financial aid, and most require remediation to bring their academic skills up to college-level standards. A new program is now in place to identify at-risk students by sixth grade and to support them as...

Kent State named J.R. Campbell the first executive director of the initiative last year. Mr. Campbell has been working at Kent State since 2009, and he has spent extens...
