Kent State University’s Columbiana County Campuses recently received a $100,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Education’s Community Connectors program, the third year such funding has been awarded for this program.   The Rural Scholars Program is designed to offer local first-generation college-bound students and their families the knowledge and social support needed to succeed at a university. A team of Kent State Ashtabula Respiratory Therapy Technology students recently put their knowledge to the test and had an impressive showing in the "Sputum Bowl" team quiz competition at the Ohio Society for Respiratory Care annual conference.  The team of second-year RTT students Dawn Fishel (captain), Makenna Hudson and Lyndsey Wheeler reached the semifinals and ultimately finished third in the state-wide event in Columbus on July 27. The Peace, War and Social Conflict Section of the American Sociological Association (ASA) presented Kent State Professor Patrick G. Coy with a career award: the Robin M. Williams, Jr. Award for Distinguished Contributions to Scholarship, Teaching and Service in the areas of peace, war, and social conflict.
