Dear Members of the Kent State Community: Northeast Ohio has enjoyed a beautiful fall season. But as all of us know, winter will soon arrive. One of my responsibilities as a senior vice president of the university is recommending cancellations and closures due to severe weather. While the safety of our people is our priority, in general the university does not close or cancel classes because of cold weather, winter ice and/or snow. Kent State University President Beverly Warren has announced that she will personally match all gifts up to a total of $25,000 for donations made to Kent State on Dec. 1, which is Giving Tuesday. Giving Tuesday is a global day of philanthropy after the Thanksgiving holiday.  Kent State has participated in Giving Tuesday the last two years, but this year, donations will have more impact with Warren’s matching gift. Tim Rudell named best reporter in Ohio WKSU has received 12 Ohio SPJ Awards for 2015 from Ohio chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ). The competition recognized station staff for work created in 2014. The station earned more honors than any other radio station in Ohio, and reporter/producer Tim Rudell was named Best Reporter in Ohio, the second consecutive year the award went to a member of the WKSU news staff. The Kent State University Bookstore has announced its fourth annual Holiday Giving Tree Program. A tree is set up at the entrance to University Bookstore located in the Kent Student Center. Each ornament on the tree represents a boy or girl who is living in transitional housing in Portage County. The bookstore would like to bring a bit of holiday cheer to each child with a gift of a book.  If you would like to be a part of this initiative, simply select a child’s ornament. The Allerton Apartment Complex went through its final phase of demolishment at the end of August. The process of closing the apartment complex has been going on since 2005. Buildings A, B, C and D were the final buildings to be razed. The Allerton Apartment Complex was built in two phases in 1962 and 1966. The apartments primarily housed Kent State international students with families and upper-division students.
