Event: Quakers and War Tax Resistance (November 19, 2024)

Talk by Ruth Cutcher on:
Quakers and War Tax Resistance

Tuesday November 19th, 2024. 4:00pm-5:15pm.

Peace Studies seminar room: McGilvrey hall 112, first floor

As one of the historic peace churches, Quakers have a long history of opposing war taxes based on their understanding of biblical texts. In the last year, there has been a surge of interest in war tax resistance as we can see in the news each day our tax dollars being used to perpetuate global inequities and violence. In this presentation, Ruth Cutcher, of the Quaker Voluntary Service, will outline the history of Quaker war tax resistance and will explain the options available for war tax resisters today. There will be ample time for Q & A after the presentation so please bring your questions!
Ruth will also be available to talk informally one on one with folks about what the Quaker Voluntary Service year is like and talk through possibilities on:

Tuesday 11/19: 10:30 - 1 in the School of Peace and Conflict Studies kitchen (McGilvrey 113)
Wednesday 11/20: 10:30am-1:00pm in the DI hub lobby

She will also have information about the Brethren and Mennonite Volunteer programs. All of these historic peace churches offer one year service programs that are a sort of domestic alternative to the peace corps. Not only do they allow you to make a significant contribution to the world, but they can be a very strategic way to start your career, as they give you great work experience with a wide choice of different nonprofits.

Having Ruth with us is a great opportunity - please do help spread the word and forward this on!
