Meet Emily Yanchak!

What is the reason you chose your major?
I chose my major because I've always been incredibly fascinated by the fashion industry and the work put into it. I've always wondered how the pieces of the industry all fit together, and I chose my major because I wanted to be a part of the industry and the creative process behind it. My sense of style has always been a huge part of my identity, and I decided that I wanted to make that aspect of my life my future career.
In your time at Kent State, what are some accomplishments you are proud of?
When I was a freshman, I helped style a look that I also modeled for the FSO fashion show last spring. Additionally, last semester, I joined KentWired. I started as a social technician, was promoted to assistant social media editor, and at the start of this semester, I became the digital editor for the paper. I am incredibly proud of the work that I have put into the paper as well as how much the experience has taught me. Finally, I am a member of the Rust Belt Fibershed Student Ambassador Program, which I am also incredibly proud of. I'm so happy that I have the chance to be a part of the search for a soil-to-soil process to make the textile industry more sustainable.
What would you like to do after graduation?
After graduation, I hope to work for Patagonia. I want to have a career in sustainability and marketing within the fashion industry, and Patagonia's company has really inspired me over the past few years, and I would love to be a part of the change that they are creating for our environment and our world.
What clubs and organizations are you involved in on campus?
I am on the Editorial Board for KentWired, I am a student ambassador for the Rust Belt Fibershed, and I am the assistant to the editor-in-chief, Aniyah, for Element Magazine.
How has your school or program made a difference to you?
My school and program has taught me to go outside of my comfort zone. It has made me become a more open-minded person, and it has taught me that change is good and adapting to an ever-changing environment is a vital part of success.
What are things you love about Kent State, your major or your school?
I love how easy it is to involve myself in the community at Kent State. It's comforting to know that no matter what I am interested in, Kent definitely has a place for me to fit in, and if they don't, I can create my own space for others like me. As for my major, I love how diverse everyone is. I love how everyone expresses themselves, and I love that even though we are all different, we can collaborate to create something that represents all of us.
What has been your favorite class at Kent State?
My favorite class at Kent State has been the Fashion Fabrics lecture and laboratory.
What are your favorite campus events?
My favorite campus events are the activities planned by the Flash Activities Board. I love all the different things they plan for the diverse student body, and how the festivities are planned around holidays, so we can celebrate even though we are away from home.
What is your best memory at Kent State?
My best memory is probably meeting my current roommate, Savana. When I was a freshman, I had a really hard first year because my first roommate and I didn't get along, and it was hard to branch out and meet new people. Last spring, I met Savana, and ever since then, we've been joined at the hip in everything we do. I can't just pick just one best memory because all my memories with Savana are the best.
What is your favorite part of working on campus?
My favorite part of working on campus is the people I work with as well as the flexibility I have with a campus job. University employers are so understanding of my studies and the fact that, first and foremost, I am a student.
Do you have advice for others?
Above all else, I would tell people to take every opportunity that they can, even if it is a cliché. College is the best place to try new things, because if you find that you don't like something, you can always quit and try something else! Don't be afraid to push yourself outside of your comfort zone, and don't be afraid to let others see you for who you truly are.

Where is the best place to study?
I love studying in the lounge areas in Rockwell Hall, the dining area in Starbucks and the fourth floor of the library.
Do you have hobbies?
I love reading, journaling, and crocheting. I also love being outside, so I am more than happy to participate in any outdoor activity!
What is your favorite movie/documentary?
My two favorite movies at the moment are The Shawshank Redemption and St. Vincent.
What song do you have on repeat?

What is your favorite place to get food in Kent?
On campus, my favorite place to get food is the Simon T. Cafe in the architecture building. Off-campus, my favorite place to get food is Bellacino's.
What is your favorite book?
My favorite book is “The Song of Achilles” by Madeline Miller.
What is your go-to coffee/tea/drink order?
I love boba, sweet fruit drinks, and matcha!
