CENTERS & INSTITUTES
The College of Arts and Sciences has many centers and institutes that not only support the teaching, research and public service mission of the college, but also benefit our communities at large.
These research and service initiatives are wide-ranging and include everything from improving Ohio's natural resources and wildlife, to developing the next generation of liquid crystal display technologies, to providing opportunities for creative expression.
Advanced Materials Liquid Crystal Institute (AMLCI)
Established in 1965, the Advanced Materials Liquid Crystal Institute is a global academic leader in liquid crystal technology and home of the Graduate Chemical Physics Interdisciplinary Program (CPIP).
Institute for African American Affairs/New World Studies (IAAA)
The Institute for African American Affairs/New World Studies, a segment of the Department of Pan-African Studies, provides practical support for the development of research and scholarship opportunities, innovative teaching methods, workshops and seminars concerning people of African descent.
Institute for Applied Linguistics (IAL)
The Institute for Applied Linguistics is a research and training unit affiliated with the Department of Modern and Classical Language Studies at Kent State University. The Institute and its faculty coordinate bachelors, masters and Ph.D. programs in Translation Studies with a focus on translation research skills, specialized translation, computer-assisted terminology and translation, software localization and project management for the language industry, but are also designed to provide a comprehensive foundation for skill development in humanistic translation and translation studies.
Applied Psychology Center (APC)
The Applied Psychology Center is a non-profit organization within the Department of Psychology whose mission is to foster applied research addressing important social problems.
Institute for Bibliography and Editing (IBE)
The Institute for Bibliography and Editing is a cross-disciplinary center designed to foster knowledge and understanding of our political, social, and cultural heritage through basic research in the Humanities and related fields. The Institute supports projects in scholarly editing, textual study, and bibliography with facilities, equipment, assistance, and shared expertise.
Brain Health Research Institute (BHRI)
Kent State University’s Brain Health Research Institute (BHRI) is committed to improving our understanding of brain function in health, disease and repair. Our mission includes the development of new approaches aimed at understanding an array of neurological disorders by identifying genetic, environmental and behavioral influences that impact brain health across the lifespan.
Center for Ecology & Natural Resource Sustainability (CENRS)
The Center for Ecology and Natural Resource Sustainability promotes an understanding of the natural environment and its resources through scientific research, education of students at Kent State University and beyond, and programs to restore and preserve the integrity of natural areas.
Environmental Science and Design Research Institute (ESDRI)
ESDRI considers the inextricable relationship between human and natural systems, as it develops innovative knowledge, products and solutions that address local, regional, and global issues in this era of human influence. The institute provides students with academic, financial, and professional support throughout their journey. ESDRI also aids faculty in advancing their research, establishing multidisciplinary collaborations, and procuring extramural funding.
Center for The Study of Gender and Sexuality (CSGS)
The mission of the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality is to advance the interdisciplinary scholarly exploration of gender and sexuality and to create and share knowledge with students, scholars and the public.
Lemnitzer Center for NATO & European Studies
Kent State University's Lyman L. Lemnitzer Center for NATO and European Union Studies devotes its activities to the expansion and dissemination of scholarly knowledge about NATO, the European Union, and related European American issues.
Center for Materials Informatics (CMI)
Kent State’s Center for Materials Informatics is a resource for students and faculty interested in data management, standards, and exchange as well as data mining and analysis as a means of accelerating scientific research, development, and adoption of new materials.
Center for Nuclear Research (CNR)
The Center for Nuclear Research supports and promotes the academic activities in the Nuclear Physics program of the Kent State University Physics Department and coordinates collaborations with scientists at institutions throughout the world.
Ohio Employee Ownership (OEOC)
The Ohio Employee Ownership Center is a non-profit, university-based program established at Kent State University in 1987 to provide outreach, information, and preliminary technical assistance to Ohio employees and business owners interested in exploring employee ownership.
Center of Pan-African Culture (CPAC)
The Center of Pan-African Culture, founded in 1970 by the Black United Students (BUS), provides the opportunity and facilities for the exposition of painting, sculpture, oral and written literature, music, dance, theatre, and other cultural modes of expression that define people of African descent.
Psychological Clinic
The Psychological Clinic provides services by masters and doctoral students under the close supervision of clinical faculty members who are licensed psychologists. The Clinic trains graduate students to be skillful clinicians, provides high quality empirically supported therapy and assessment services, and contributes to the development of new knowledge through applied research.
Science of Learning and Education (SOLE) Center
The SOLE Center fosters evidence-based reform of STEM education, Health education, and literacy and language learning, to improve achievement and retention for Kent State students and for K-12 students in the surrounding community.
Wick Poetry Center
The Wick Poetry Center engages emerging and established poets and poetry audiences through readings, publications, workshops, and scholarship opportunities. The Center encourages new voices by promoting opportunities for individuals and communities locally, regionally, and nationally.
