In the Hearing and Aging Laboratory, we study the factors that impact age-related changes in the auditory system, specifically as they relate to speech perception difficulties. We are also interested in how these factors impact speech understanding with cochlear implants (surgically implanted neural devices that improve hearing). We use electrophysiological and behavioral methods to address the relative contributions of peripheral, central, and cognitive mechanisms to changes in speech perception. Ultimately, we hope this knowledge will provide the basis for the development of auditory rehabilitation strategies that are better suited to the needs of the growing population of older adults.
