Biography

Isolde Thyrêt is Associate Professor of History at Kent State University specializing in the history of Western medieval Europe and medieval Russia. Her areas of interest are medieval women, medieval religion and culture, and the use of images in history. She received her Ph.D. in History from the University of Washington. She is currently teaching “The Early Middle Ages,” “The High Middle Ages,” “Colloquium: Medieval Russia,” “Colloquium: Saints, Monks, and the Medieval Community,” “Colloquium: Women in Europe from Antiquity to Renaissance.” In 2001 Dr. Thyrêt published Between God and  Tsar: Religious Symbolism and the Royal Women of Muscovy, which deals with the religious role of the tsars’ wives in medieval Russian government and society. The monograph received the 2002 Barbara Heldt Prize for best book in Slavic/East European/Eurasian women’s studies, awarded by the Association for Women in Slavic Studies, and the 2002 Ohio Academy of History Outstanding Publication Award. Dr. Thyrêt has published articles in a number of American, Russian, and European Journals, and scholarly collections.
