Advising

After Destination Kent State, each honors student is assigned an Honors College advisor. Honors advisors collaborate with students to customize their educational experiences in alignment with their interests and goals. They offer tools for navigating honors requirements and connecting students with resources and experiential opportunities, thereby creating a distinctive and enriching honors academic experience.

While honors advisors provide guidance on honors course selection, they do not replace the primary major advisors responsible for tracking academic progress.

Honors Advising Policy

  • This is the policy for students in good standing with the Honors College:

    • During their first 4 semesters of Honors College membership, students must attend a minimum of 1 scheduled advising appointment per semester.

    • After their first 4 semesters of Honors College membership, students must attend a minimum of 1 scheduled advising appointment per academic year.

      • In the semester they do not have a scheduled advising appointment, students must update their advisor on their progress with honors hours via the Honors Advising Plan form.

  • If students are on probation with the Honors College, they must attend a minimum of 1 scheduled advising appointment per semester.

  • When students have completed their honors hours, they are waived from honors advising but can still see their honors advisor if they wish to.

Advising Appointments - Scheduling & Check-In

Students must schedule their honors advising appointments through KSUAdvising: Schedule an Honors Advising Appointment Here.

  • In-person appointments are held in the lower level of Stopher Hall in the Honors College office. Room 20 Stopher is the reception area for the Honors College office. Students should check in at the reception desk (shown below).

  • Remote appointments utilize Microsoft Teams.

Honors Priority Registration

Honors students can register for their classes before most other students at Kent State, providing them with flexibility in constructing their schedules. Honors advisors email students each semester with the priority registration date.

It is recommended that students fulfill any advising requirements with their primary advisors for their majors before honors priority registration. If students have fulfilled their advising requirements with their primary advisors, they can register for non-honors courses during honors priority registration, even if they have not yet met with their honors advisors

Registration for Honors Courses

Registration for honors courses is controlled by the Honors College. Students must contact their honors advisors to request honors course registration permits.

Exception: Students enrolled in HONR 10197: Freshman Honors Colloquium I have reserved seats in HONR 10297: Freshman Honors Colloquium II. They will receive honors registration permits for the same section of HONR 10297 as HONR 10197. If students have fulfilled their advising requirements with their primary advisors, they can register for HONR 10297 during honors priority registration, even if they have not yet met with their honors advisors.
