Phi Beta Kappa
With its founding at the College of William & Mary in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa is the nation's oldest academic honor society.
The motto of the society, "Love of learning is the guide of life" reflects the society's advocacy of excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. Each year, about one college senior in a hundred, nationwide, is invited to join Phi Beta Kappa. An invitation to join reflects a student's outstanding achievements and strong potential.
Membership shows commitment to the liberal arts and sciences and provides a competitive edge in the marketplace. There are over half a million members, but only about 10 percent of the nation's institutions of higher learning have Phi Beta Kappa chapters and only about 10 percent of the arts and sciences graduates at these institutions are selected for membership.
Each year faculty members who themselves were chosen for membership in Phi Beta Kappa at their undergraduate institutions meet and discuss exceptional Kent State students in the liberal arts. Students elected to membership participate in an initiation ceremony each spring.
If you have questions concerning eligibility or election to membership in the Nu of Ohio chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, please contact the Honors College at 330-672-2312.
