Changes to NIH Proposal Guidelines
Changes to NIH Proposal Guidelines
Applications for Receipt Dates on/after January 25, 2023
Data Management and Sharing (DMS)
Brief Summary of Changes
Since 2003, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has only required grants with $500,000 per year or more in direct costs to provide a brief explanation of how and when data resulting from the grant would be shared.
Starting January 25, 2023, ALL grant applications or renewals that generate Scientific Data must now include a robust and detailed plan for how data will be managed and shared during the entire funded period.
NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy Webinars help to clarify the policy in terms of what it means for stakeholders.
Elements of an NIH Data Management & Sharing Plan include:
- Data Type
- Related Tools, Software and/or Code
- Standards
- Data Preservation, Access, and Associated Timelines
- Access, Distribution, or Reuse Considerations
- Oversight of Data Management and Sharing
Compliance
Awardees are required to comply with the approved DMS plan. Non-compliance may result in enforcement action, including additional special terms and conditions or termination of the award, and may affect future funding decisions.
