Data Management and Sharing (DMS)

Brief Summary of Changes

Since 2003, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has only required grants with $500,000 per year or more in direct costs to provide a brief explanation of how and when data resulting from the grant would be shared.

Starting January 25, 2023, ALL grant applications or renewals that generate Scientific Data must now include a robust and detailed plan for how data will be managed and shared during the entire funded period.

Compliance

Awardees are required to comply with the approved DMS plan. Non-compliance may result in enforcement action, including additional special terms and conditions or termination of the award, and may affect future funding decisions.
